Stock Certificate

I was given a stock certificate that appears to have conflicting information. Can you expalin this?
The conflicting info. is as follows:
In the upper right hand corner, it indicates 100,000 shares.
In a box in the middle of the certificate, it says 40,000 shares common stock, – $01 par value.
And below, it certifies that I am the registered holder of 100,000 shares.
I’ve never held stock before, and would like to have an explanation for the two different amounts. Thanks for your help.
Most likely it is a typo. You should contact the companies shareholder services and they will let you know.

He represented Perth South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1902 to 1904 and from 1908 to 1911 as a Liberal member.
