Patronage and Politics in the USSR $70.1 How do Soviet politicans rise to power? How are conflicting political interests brought together as policies are developed? Historians and political scientists have long been absorbed by these questions, yet none has systematically examined the crucial role played by patronclient relations. In Patronage and Politics in the USSR Professor John Willerton offers major new insights into the patronage networks that have dominated elite mobility, regime formation and governance in the Soviet Union for the past twentyfive years. Using the career details of over two thousand national and regional officials, John Willerton traces the patronclient relations underlying recruitment, mobility and policymaking. Russian Chess Championship $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Russian Chess Championship has taken various forms throughout history. In 1874, Emanuel Schiffers defeated Andrey Chardin in a match held in St. Petersburg with five wins and four losses. Schiffers was considered the first Russian champion until his student, Mikhail Chigorin, defeated him in a match held in St. Petersburg in 1879. Chigorin won with seven wins, four losses, and two draws. In 1899 the format of the championship was changed to a roundrobin tournament known as the AllRussian Masters Tournament. After the formation of the USSR the USSR Chess Championship was established as the national championship. However the Russian championship continued to exist as the championship of the RSFSR. The first two USSR championships in 1920 and 1923 were also recognized as RSFSR championships; the modern numbering of Russian championships begins with these two tournaments. The cities Moscow and Leningrad held their own championships and their players were ineligible to play in the RSFSR championship. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Russian Grand Prix $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Russian Grand Prix was a race during the early years of Grand Prix motor racing. In present day there are plans to revive the Russian Grand Prix as a Formula One race, scheduled to take place at a yettobebuilt circuit near Saint Petersburg. The first Russian Grand Prix was held in Saint Petersburg in June 1913 and was won by Russian driver G. Suvorin in a Benz 29/60 hp. The second edition was run in May 1914 and was won by German Willy Scholl, driving a Benz 55/150 hp. After that the First World War and the Russian Civil War meant that there would be no more Russian Grands Prix for many years. Proposals of the Grand Prix have appeared as early as the 1980s. The first socialist country to host a Grand Prix could have been the USSR instead of Hungary (which hosted its first in 1986). In 1982 Bernie Ecclestone came to the USSR for talks on holding the Grand Prix of the Soviet Union. In 1983 a round hosted by Moscow was included in the provisional World Championship calendar; however, bureaucratic barriers prevented the Grand Prix from being held. Russian AllMilitary Union $172.06 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Russian AllMilitary Union (in Russian , abbreviated, ROVS) was founded by White Army General Pyotr Wrangel in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes on September 1, 1924. This organization united all veterans of the Russian White movement, soldiers and officers alike, who were living abroad and desired to stay united for the purpose of purging Russia from the Bolshevik regime. The Union, known in Russian as the ROVS, also tried to conduct operations within the USSR for the purpose of starting a national anticommunist uprising. The ROVS was formed outside of Soviet Russia. Aside from anticommunism, the ROVS did not have an official political orientation, somewhat adhering to the old Russian military dictum which said The Army is outside of politics (in Russian ), believing that the political orientation of Russia cannot be predetermined by emigres living outside of its borders (the philosophy of nonpredetermination or in Russian ). Russian Jewish Immigration to Israel $100.37 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Russian Jewish immigration to Israel began en mass in the 1990s when the liberal government of Mikhail Gorbachev opened the borders of the USSR and allowed Jews to leave the country for Israel. In the early 1990s, many Jews chose to immigrate to Israel because the United States changed its policy of treating Soviet Jews as refugees and allowing unlimited immigration, whereas Israel was willing to receive them unconditionally. Until the closing of the gates in the 1970s and 1980s, some 600,000 Soviet Jews immigrated to the United States. The departure of individual citizen of the USSR was conditioned on the approval of the KGB. Many who sought those approvals were denied. Those who tried to escape the USSR and did not succeed were considered traitors, were fired from their jobs, and became targets of hatred by the public.
