Rare Book?

I was looking at a first edition of Atlas Shrugged for $650, but at another place it was $3000, why is that the case?

The usual answer is condition.

However, “first edition” is a misleading term. The easiest way I can tell you what that means is to think of how books used to be published, using lead type. A first edition was essentially printed using the first set of lead type made to print the book.

What you think of as a first edition is actually the first printing, that is, the first set of books printed. The second set of books printed using that same type are also a first edition, but the second printing.

This is one of those things that gets people in trouble all the time when they start to collect books. Go look at the book terms on ABE, that might help with this too. (I’ve provided a link below.)

So, the answer above about condition is true, but it’s also true that one book might be a first PRINTING and the other not.
