How to clean an antique ironstone platter?
I bought a great ceramic platter from the thrift store, but it has a few spots where the glaze is scratched, and stains have soaked into the body. They didn’t come out with normal washing. Can I soak the platter in a bleach solution? Will that help? Will it damage the glaze? Is there a better way to clean it?
It’s white, with a bit of a yellowish patina.
Ironstone is kind of touchy… sorry… unless it’s actually white, you’re kinda up the creek. If it is white, you’re lucky… (unless it’s a rust stain). Soak it in a 1/4 bleach/water solution and it should come out in about 6-8 hours. Unless the ceramic is yellow, use clorox because of it’s bluish dye, you’ll get a more brilliant white color. Ironstone is actually kind of marketable, expecially those that can restore it. When you get done with the bleaching, let it dry for a day or two (or five). If you plan on actually using it, get it re-kilned.. if you’re just wanting it as an astetic peice, clear coat it in polyeruothane. If you want to sell it, keep it for now, and find the right market, you’ll sell it for more than you paid.
