Viceroyalty of Peru $74.88 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Created in 1542, the Viceroyalty of Peru (in Spanish, Virreinato del Per) was a Spanish colonial administrative district that originally contained most of Spanishruled South America, governed from the capital of Lima. The Viceroyalty of Peru was one of the two Spanish Viceroyalties in America from the sixteenth to the seventeenth centuries. However, the Spanish did not resist the Portuguese expansion of Brazil across the meridian. The Treaty of Tordesillas was rendered meaningless between 1580 and 1640 while Spain controlled Portugal. The creation of Viceroyalties of New Granada and Rio de la Plata reduced the importance of Lima and shifted the lucrative Andean trade to Buenos Aires. Governance in Combating Desertification in Peru $103.56 Considered one of the global environmental problems, desertification land degradation in arid regions has been high in the international agenda since the 1970s. However, its solution is far from being achieved, partly due to its complex and sitespecific chain of causes and partly to the inefficacy of the institutional arrangements devised to tackle it: the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and its national implementation. Drawing on the literature on governance for natural resource management, this book analyses the desertification control strategy in Peru focusing on Apurimac, a poor region in the southern Andes suffering land degradation due to frequent droughts, sloping terrain, inadequate irrigation practices, deforestation and pasture burning. Using secondary literature, interviews with authorities and participatory workshops with farmers, the linkages between organisations and institutions for managing natural resources in the region and their relation with the formal strategy to combat desertification are explored. This book is of interest to policymakers and practitioners in the field of rural development and natural resource management in mountain areas. Dog Population Management in Malawi and Peru $98.77 There are about 500 million dogs in the world of which approximately 375 million are free roaming. Dogs living without human supervision may suffer from diseases, starvation, trauma and painful death. Dogs are also carriers and transmitters of several important zoonotic diseases, eg. rabies and echinococcosis. Control programmes for free roaming dogs as well as rabies vaccination programmes are running in many countries. Guidelines in dog population management, DPM, have also been published by both WHO, OIE and The ICAM Coalition, but still stray dogs are a problem of great concern. The question is why? In this book the problems associated with straying dogs are presented as well as the enunciation of major guidelines for DPM. Fieldstudies have been conducted in two different countries, Malawi and Peru, to see how published guidelines in DPM are implemented, what difficulties and challanges these two countries are facing and what could be done to better meet the problems.
