What do I do about an unknown horrible smell in my kitchen?

There is a hideous dead-body type smell in one corner of my kitchen, but I can’t trace where it comes from. I’ve checked all my cupboards. Could a rat have died beneath my kitchen floor, and if so, how do I find out?
