Counter height for a two level bar?

I have a wall that divides my kitchen and dinning room. I want to knock the wall out and create a two level breakfast bar. One level will serve as the bar to eat at (dinning room side) and the other level will be in the kitchen over new cabinets. What height do these need to be?

There are three basic heights you need to know. Then you need to decide what type of chair or stool you want.

A table top is usually 30″ from the floor.

A kitchen counter top is usually 36″ from the floor.

A standard raised counter top for a breakfast bar is 42″ from the surface to the floor.

You need to decide if you want regular height chairs or raised 30″ stools or whatever.

The you need to consider the underlayment or the support for the counter. This is usually a layer of 3/4″ underlayment with an additional 3/4″ on the edges (or on the entire counter if it is cantilevered).

I have a personal preference of 42″ with a 6″ drop to the working kitchen counter on the other side. This 6 ” drop will give you a space to install electrical outlets or TV/computer jacks etc.
