What color stain for a mahogany desk?
Antique solid mahogany desk needs total refinishing. What color (minwax) stain should I use? I don’t want to diminish the value/beauty of the mahogany wood, but I will be using the desk in a room with maple/nutmeg furniture and I would prefer it was not too dark or too reddish.
I would find out the value of this desk first. Ive seen many antique pieces ruined from trying to make it look nice. but if you have to I would clean it, lightly sand, clean again and put a clear coat on it. Polyurethane, shellac, ect. Mahogany is too nice to cover. The natural beauty will stand out and turn a little darker with the clear.
